Pain builds you. Pain creates a character in you that can face the world more bravely and smarter.
Kenya´s renowned hip hop guru, Nazizi has talked of life away from the screens and studios. She leads a normal life like you and me.
She has been through the darkest of moments and back to the light. It´s a cycle of life.
Nazizi became too popular, it was overwhelming her and she decide to tone that down by moving away to Lamu.
Relocation
She lived in Lamu for 3 years with her then-lover and her tender son. Starting from scratch – paused music career and unsure means of survival.
With a son turning 1 year, Nazizi was having the happiest moments in her life before partying ways with her partner.
I was there when my son took his first steps, I experienced all the moments – big and small.
Things had blacked out for her, with her support system back in Nairobi and left with a son to nurture.
I hadn’t recorded anything for three years. I had to think about my career then. I thought maybe moving back would be the best thing. God also works in mysterious ways because every decision I’ve ever made, He always backs me up. When I came to Nairobi and people heard I was back, I started getting projects.
The celebrated Kenyan singer re-defined loss, instead of getting shattered, loss built her. She focused on the bigger picture.
I tell many people if I lost my brother, the most valuable person in my life and I am still here, then I am strong. Much later, I went through a divorce. If you lose something valuable, a person or a job, it is the beginning of another journey. If you look at it like it is the end, then it could be the end.
Marriage
Having gone through a divorce, and now with a well-grown son, she has not completely given the vacation of marriage her back.
However, she has learnt her lessons. Too young for marriage but it happened.
Regarding my first marriage, I was in that relationship from when I was 21 years old. I didn’t know exactly what marriage is. I didn’t know it was work. I was married but I was putting more work into my career.
Now, she has grown ´older and wiser´.
I haven’t written off marriage, but if I were to get married again, I would approach it differently. I know I will find the right balance.
Nazizi has revealed that in an event that someone suitable shows up, she will first dig through the kind of person they are, their history and past relationships.
The hip-hop legend has admitted to getting lost in relationships, and failing to find herself which after divorce, made it difficult for her to re-start life.
Sometimes in a relationship, you know everything your partner likes, but can’t answer the same questions about yourself, and when the relationship ends you have no idea where to start. That happened to me and finding myself after was quite difficult.
Life lessons
The beauty and mother of one has been through thick and thin and has gained wisdom over the years.
She closes off by encouraging:
As much as it is challenging and hard sometimes, see the beauty in it and don’t carry anger and bitterness. I know the environment, I have become more organised and more loving. I am genuinely happy.
