Prescott Cup semifinals took place this weekend and Upper Hill proved to be the better side after upsetting host Lenana school 58- 3 in the first semi-final.
Upper Hill were set to play against Rift Valley Academy(RVA) who had booked the spot after downing Lenana School at the quarter-final stage. This, however, was not the case as RVA pulled out of the tournament prior to the semis hence leaving the spot for “Changez”.
Speaking after the match, Changez coach Evans Ojwang’ said they lost to a better side but bemoaned lack of enough time to prepare for the game.
“We lost most of the comedown but as you understand our opponents are bigger, they have mass and my boys are smaller but we played a good game and we lost to a good team.”
“We lost to RVA on some technical issues, everyone knew RVA was going to play Upper Hill but we were told they had pulled out at the last minute so we were told we will be playing Upper Hill two days to the game hence we had little time to train and plan for the game, this also worked to our disadvantage,’’ said Ojwang.
Upper Hill commanded the game right from the first minute making smart runs that outclassed their opponents. They converted most of the chances they got and utilized every opportunity gained. Despite winning heavily, coach Thomas Walgwe was not impressed with the games start citing lack of competitive games to use as a training platform.
“It was a bit frustrating at the beginning because Upper Hill has better starts than that, we haven’t played rugby in the past three weeks and I was aiming not to show that to our opponents,’’
“We had to shift a little bit but we train and that’s the way we play, there are a few adjustments we make depending on the opponent but for us we say it doesn’t matter who you put before us we are ready to play,” Walgwe said On the game strategy after learning that they were going to face Lenana instead of RVA.
Upper Hill will be facing Dagorretii High who made it to the final on walkover basis after Alliance High School charge failed to produce a team to square it out on the second semi-final.
“We are going to meet a good Dagoretti side, we faced them on the county finals and we have an idea of who we are going to face”
“We have no injuries everyone is healthy and we are looking forward to getting back to training and prepare for Dagoretti,” said the coach on the final set for this month
Elsewhere Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) are the new Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) Rugby 7s series fourth edition champions after smashing Kabarak University charge 17- 0.
MMUST made it to the finals having defeated Daystar University 14-5 while Kabarak saw off host Moi University 17-12 in a thrilling match. The circuit kicked off this weekend starting from group stages. Moi university finished third after bashing Daystar 22-0 in the playoffs.
