Xiaomi is one of the Chinese vendors often accused of delayed Android OS updates due to the heavy MIUI skin layered on top of stock Android. However, the company has significantly improved in this aspect over the recent past, something that is further evidenced by the latest developments that bring MIUI 10 based on Android Q to the Xiaomi Mi 9.

Xiaomi started recruiting Mi 9 users earlier this month and now those who submitted their interest can download and install MIUI 10 based on Android Q on their devices. The update is arriving as MIUI 10 beta 9.7.11, suggesting it went live yesterday.

Of course, this version is limited to those in China, but you can always grab the MIUI 10 ROM and install it manually, including on your global variant of the Mi 9. This method, the fastboot way, requires that your Mi 9’s bootloader is unlocked. If I’ve lost you, then it’s better to stay off this version and wait for the stable rollout, probably in Q4 2019.

Android Q brings more privacy-focused improvements to MIUI 10, among them app-specific permissions for background apps, Dark Mode in the display settings, and more.
