Police were looking for the girl’s father who is said to be a notorious chang’aa brewer.
Police in Litein have arrested a 13-year-old girl for selling chang’aa.
Speaking yesterday, Bureti OCPD Felicia Nafula said the girl was arrested on Sunday with 97 litres of chang’aa.
She was also found with Sh47,000 believed to be proceeds from the illegal alcohol trade.
Ms Nafula said police were looking for the girl’s father who is said to be a notorious chang’aa brewer. He escaped when his daughter was arrested.
“The girl is a Standard Seven pupil at a local school. Apart from her, we also arrested two other people who we found drinking chang’aa at their house,” said Nafula.
Police also recovered a 50-litre jerrycan containing chang’aa that had been buried outside the house.
According to data from the county government, 4,537 litres of chang’aa, 51,243 litres of Kang’ara and 27,589 litres of busaa have been impounded between January and May.
“Contrary to what some people say, the war against brewing and consumption of illicit alcohol has gained momentum in the county,” said Kericho County Commissioner Moses Mbaruku.
“The quantity of illicit drinks we have impounded is enough to create a stream,” said Mr Mbaruku.
He revealed that 770 people have been arrested between January and May for selling illicit brews.
The suspects, he said, have already been taken to court for possessing 1,512 litres of chang’aa, 2,642 litres of Kang’ara and 3,657 litres of busaa.
“The suspects were in total fined Sh3 million by the courts,” said Mbaruku.
