Police have arrested one of the most wanted Al Shabaab operatives believed to have been behind the Dusit D2 attack which happened in January this year.
One Mr Fawaz Ahmed Hamdun was drawn out of hiding by a multi-agency team on Sunday night, according to a police statement.
Fawaz is believed to have facilitated the re-entry to Kenya of suicide bomber Mahir Riziki, who was seen in graphic footage detonating an explosive on his body near a restaurant at the Dusit complex.
The suicide bomber had been on the most wanted list of terrorist suspects after he killed a police officer and fled to Tanzania.
CCTV footage that led police to Al Shabaab recruiter
Fawaz, 28, is also accused of recruiting youth for the terrorist group, most recently in Majengo, Mombasa County where he was busted.
The suspect captured in CCTV footage obtained from cameras along the streets of Mombasa a few weeks ago.
The detectives had been looking for one Salim Fariz Hadin whose family had reported him missing.
In the CCTV footage, Fawaz was seen with the missing boy who is believed to have been recruited into the terrorist group.
Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the January 15 terrorist attack which claimed 21 lives.
One of the attackers was identified as Salim Gichunge and was said to have been executed by police during the attack.
Gichunge’s girlfriend, Violet Kemunto, is said to have fled the country, though police have in the past arrested a woman they believed to have been the wanted Al Shabaab bride.
