Governor Hassan Joho has lauded firefighters and staff from the Mombasa Hospital for their speedy response after fire broke out on Tuesday night.

He confirmed that the situation had been contained following the inferno that is said to have been caused by a gas explosion.

“My sympathies go to patients who were admitted at Mombasa hospital at the time fire broke out. Thanks to firefighters from different units who responded on time to contain the situation. To hospital staff and good samaritans, asanteni for the speedy evacuation of patients,” the Governor said on Twitter.

It took approximately two hours for firefighters and officers from other agencies to extinguish the fire that reportedly did not reach patients’ rooms.

Coast Police Regional Security Commander Rashid Yakub said preliminary investigations revealed that a gas tank exploded inside the hospital.

“Mtungi wa gesi ulilipuka katika sehemu ya jikoni ya hospitali hio na kisha kusambaa,” he told Citizen Digital.

He said all patients were however evacuated in good time and transferred to other hospitals including Pandya, Aga Khan, Premier and Coast General.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, 20 patients were transferred to the various hospitals.

The Mombasa Hospital management has stated that none of the workers or patients were injured during the Tuesday night incident.

Police were also forced to cordon off the area as families of those hospitalized and curious onlookers flocked the vicinity.
