Andy Munyiri from Damacrest Academy in Uthiru Nairobi County is still in seventh heaven after emerging as this year’s top Kenya Certificate of Primary Education candidate.
Munyiri scored 440 marks out of a possible 500 marks in the results released by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Monday. He was at his grandparents’ home at the time.
“I was visiting my grandparents when we saw the news, I expected a good performance,” he told journalists yesterday.
Apparently, the promise of a laptop and a trip to the Ark Lodge motivated Munyiri to work hard and meet his target, which was 420 marks.
“My father promised to buy me a laptop and take me to the Ark Hotel if I got more than 420 marks, this made me work so hard,” he said.
While he expected a good result, Munyiri said emerging the top pupil in the country was a pleasant surprise.
“I wasn’t sure what I’d get. I received the results in my grandfather’s house in Nyeri and when the CS mentioned my name I was very excited,” he said.
“I give credit to my teachers because they prepared us for the exams and I thank God. Support from my family encouraged me to continue working hard in class,” Munyiri added.
He hopes to join Alliance Boys High School for his secondary education. The top student aspires to be like his grandfather who was an automative engineer.
“My favourite subject is science and I hope to become an automotive engineer like my grandfather,” he said.
