A police officer has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 21-year-old Kibabii University student.
The student, who is receiving treatment at the Bungoma West Hospital in Kanduyi, was attacked and sexually abused by a lone assailant in the wee hours of Friday.
The third-year Bachelor of Science learner was attacked at around 5 am just 200 meters from her rented house in Kibabii, Bungoma Town. The attacker also chopped off one of her arms.
The student said she was heading to her house together with her friends after spending the night at a nightclub in Bungoma Town when the assailant confronted them. Her friends managed to escape, leaving her behind.
The suspect raped her and thereafter severed her left arm before tying the bleeding stem of the upper limb with barbed wire.
The victim’s arm was found hours later wrapped in her bra and thrown on the roof of a house in the neighborhood.
On Saturday, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Constable Eric Mutama, who is attached to Tuutu Administration Police Camp, was arrested in connection with the crime and will be arraigned in court next week.
