Kenya Basketball League women defending champions Equity Bank have one foot into the final of after defeating UON Dynamites 60-32 in Game One of the semi-final playoffs series at Nyayo Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Hawks dominated all the quarters with a win of 10-5 in the first quarter before picking a 17-8 win in the second quarter. They continued with the same momentum in the third quarter winning 15-8 before winding it up with 18-11 win in the fourth quarter.

Belinda Okoth continued with her good form scoring 16 points for the bankers followed by Rita Aluoch who had 11 while Shalon Gaceri scored 10 for UoN.

The two will face-off again Sunday at the same venue in Game Two before playing Game Three and four next weekend.

Despite the win, Equity head coach David Maina was not impressed.

“We did not have a good game and especially failing to take care of the ball when we had it. We need to improve on our possession,” Maina said.

Meanwhile former champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) also inched closer to the league final after defeating Storms 82-52 in Game One of the semis clash at the same venue.

Head coach Mike Opel said: “We played well; I loved the intensity on defence as we capitalized on Storms lapses. I am hoping for better performance in Game Two tomorrow (Sunday),” Opel said.

However, the Dockers captain Brenda Angeshi said it’s too early to celebrate.

“It was a good show for us. Our defence bailed us out today. It’s a series therefore we are not celebrating yet because we have to take a game at time,” Angeshi added.

KPA is likely to meet Equity in the final, a repeat of last season’s battle.
