HMD Global’s hero device for the year, the Nokia 9 PureView, is the latest from the company’s expanding lineup of devices to receive an upgrade to the latest version of Android, 10.

The Android 10 update for the Nokia 9 PureView, according to HMD Global, is currently rolling out to the device in various regions around the world.

Unveiled back in February at Mobile World Congress 2019, the Nokia 9 PureView has been available in Kenya for a while for a premium – it’s the most pricey Nokia smartphone in the market – thanks to its premium feature set.

Users of the device in the country can expect the update to hit their devices over the next few days as the global rollout continues.

As noted by Nokia, users need to be on the latest security patch for the device in order to receive the update.

With this, the Nokia 9 PureView becomes the second Nokia smartphone to receive Android 10.

The first one, the Nokia 8.1, received the update just under 2 months ago.

The Nokia 7.1 is next on the line according to the upgrade roadmap HMD Global released back in August.

As per remarks made by the company’s General Manager for Global Portfolio Planning, Pranav Schroff, at an event to unveil the latest Nokia smartphones in Cairo, Egypt, the device will be getting that update next week.

From January 2020, it will be the turn of other Nokia smartphones, including the first one to get Android 9 Pie last year, the Nokia 7 Plus, to get their Android 10 treat.

While everyone – from Xiaomi and Tecno to Samsung, Sony and Huawei – has upped their game when it comes to releasing the Android 10 update to their devices, HMD Global’s reputation for being ahead of the curve when it comes to this still remains stellar.

By offering all its devices under the Android One programme, the company is able to assure users of those devices up to 3 years of receiving the critical monthly security updates and 2 years of upgrades to the latest versions of Android.

Android 10’s predecessor, Android 9 Pie, took a whole year to just reach over a fifth of all the Android devices in the world, an achievement in Androidland but a further indictment of the sad state of affairs (so bad that Google won’t even give us the usual month by month distribution stats it has usually provided for close to a decade) that Google is hard at work to change.

From January 2020, Google will require any new Android devices to be running on version 10 before certifying them to access Google Play Services and its mobile products and services suite.

For those that can’t wait the few hours or days it will take for the update to hit their devices, they can download the image files and flash away.
