Marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge has beat a host of top sporting personalities to win the prestigious BBC Sports Personality’s World Sport Star of the Year.
Kipchoge enjoyed a terrific 2019, including his INEOS 1:59 feat that saw him become the first person to run a marathon in under two hours back in October.
The 35-year-old staged an epic run to complete 42.2km in one hour 59 minutes 40 to conquer the INEOS Challenge in Vienna, Austria.
The achievement crowned his otherwise impressive year as he had six months earlier won the London Marathon for a record fourth time.
At the time, he broke his own London Marathon record set three years ago by an impressive 28 seconds.
As such, the Rio 2016 Olympic medalist was the odds’ favourite to claim the BBC gong, beating a host of competitors including American gymnast Simone Biles and South Africa’s Rugby World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi.
Australian cricketer Steve Smith, American golfer Tiger Woods and USA footballer Megan Rapinoe were also shortlisted for the award.
The legendary marathoner earned the accolade after topping an online public vote.
