A Kenyan woman died while her sister survived after they were shot by an 85-year-old woman, whom they were hosting at their newly-purchased house in Seattle, Washington on Thursday.
Janet ‘Jay’ Oyuga died at the scene while her sister, Angela was rushed to Harborview Hospital in Seattle after she was shot in the chest. The elderly woman identified by neighbors as Beverly Jenne is said to have shot Janet first and hid her body as she waited for her sister Angela to get home from her late shift, according to reports.
Jenne reportedly fired at Angela as she was walked up the stairs. Fortunately, she survived and is currently admitted at Harborview Hospital with a gunshot wound.
The two Kenyan sisters had recently bought the new home on auction and out of kindness, they decided to host Jenne, who had reportedly lived in the same house for 40 years and had nowhere to go.
Federal Way police say they are still working to figure out the motive behind the shooting of the two women, who are in their 30s. Neighbors said they heard shouting followed by four to five gunshots at around 1 a.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of SW 306TH Lane.
“It’s frightening when something like that happens so close,” said Toni Gish, a neighbor.
Neighbors described Jenne as a “sweet” old woman with one saying she weighs 97 pounds and that he would help her down the stairs.
“We’re not going to make a determination on arresting until we can figure out more down the road – to determine if she’s a suspect or victim,” said Cmdr. Kurt Schwan with the Federal Way Police Department.
The Kenyan community in the United States has joined hands to help the family of the deceased in planning her funeral.
