Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati has dispelled rumours doing rounds that he is contemplating ditching Ford Kenya party of Moses Wetang’ula and vie on another party ticket as the 2022 elections draws closer.
“Those spreading rumours that there is a fallout between me and my party leader will be in for a rude shock, I will vie on FK in 2022, take thus to the bank,” he assured the party adherents and supporters.
The county boss denied allegations that he is planning to take over Ford Kenya party from its party leader. Word has it senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka is in talks with Ford-K leader Wetang’ula to defect to the party and go for governorship.
Wangamati is said to not be in good terms with Wetang’ula. Wangamati was elected on Wetang’ula’s popularity and has not performed well as governor. He is more of a technocrat than a politician.
Others say Wetang’ula is under pressure to go for governorship on grounds that in 2013, he silently backed Lusaka and come 2017, he was for Wangamati. Insiders in the senator’s camp say if he runs, then the politics in the county will change dramatically.
“Those spreading such rumours have got a hidden agenda as I’m not interested in being a party leader because I’m contented with my current post and my pledge is better my people’s lives,” Wangamati said.
It has been rumoured that Wangamati is in the process of forming a party known as Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya alongside Devolution cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa, something that the governor has vehemently denied.
“Let me assure my people that I’m in Ford Kenya to stay and let me tell you that I will vie on its ticket come August 2022, and be assured that I will still emerge the winner,” said Wangamati.
He stated that his relationship with the party leader is intact and they are working together to ensure that Ford Kenya is very vibrant.
“As your governor, be assured that my development record will not be comparable, this will be a yard stick towards my reelection bid,” he said.
On development, Wangamati stated that by June 2021, the ongoing dual carriageway road project that will cost the taxpayer a whopping Sh1.4 billion will be complete.
The 6.5 kilometre road from Musikoma junction to Kanduyi market is financed by the county government and will open up the town.
“It will improve the value of property in Bungoma town and it will attract investors. The design will reduce the number of accidents, cure drainage challenges, beautify and change the face of our county,” said Wangamati.
