Bomet governor Hillary Barchok has officially nominated Stella Langat as the county secretary. Langat was the deputy county commissioner in Awasi, Kisumu county before his recent elevation. She will take over from Evelyn Rono who was shown the door in unknown circumstances. The governor is cleaning up his office and sources told this writer that some staff that used to undermine Barchok when he served under the late Joyce Laboso are said to be targeted. It was in the public domain that some county executive committees were too powerful to an extend of not recognising the deputy governor who apparently is now their boss now. Rono was close to the late governor, an issue that might have deprived her job because the new boss has to scout for his trusted lieutenants.
A source told this writer that one of the ministers holding a powerful portfolio is in the list of those to vacate as he is known to undermine the current governor when he was deputy to the throne. As the governor is busy cleaning his government, he risks being cited for contempt of court after swearing in new county secretary, defying orders quashing the sacking of Evelyn Rono from the position. Rono moved to the Employment and Labour Relation Court to challenge her removal. Langat’s nomination was approved by the county assembly ea and sworn in the same day. The Employment and Labour Relation Court in Nairobi quashed the sacking of Evelyn Cherotich Rono through conservatory orders pending the hearing of a judicial review.
Through an application which has been certified as urgent and admitted for hearing ex-parte in the first instance, Rono cited Governor Barchok and county government of Bomet as respondent with the county assembly being cited as interested party. Rono was sacked by Governor Barchok on April 1 this year. Rono was at the same time directed to file a substantive judicial review and serve the respondents and interested party within 21 days to enable the hearing to kick off. Barchok during the swearing in wish the new county secretary well saying he was looking forward to better service delivery. “Personally, I am hoping for better services and looking forward for your cooperation so that we can take our county to a better level,” said Barchok.
