Construction of Nakuru Airport Enters Critical Stage

Nakuru town’s journey towards having an airport gained momentum following the closing of bids for the  construction of the multi-million project.

The Ksh 400 million project will see elevation of the military owned Lanet Airstrip into a modern  Airport.

Opening of tenders is expected to be done in the coming week at the Kenya Airports Authority(KAA) headquarters in Narobi.

The tender opening process will be done virtually.

The project being funded by the national government will be done in two phases with the initial phase including the construction of  1.7Km runway, rehabilitation of the current runway to bitumen standards, erection of a fence and construction of taxi ways.

Phase One will also see the construction of a terminal building and a military lounge,construction of air rescue and fire fighting building as well as the construction of military and civilian gates.

A power substation and  a patrol road will also be completed in the first phase.Once complete, the new airport will allow bigger cargo and passenger planes of approximately 40 to 100 tonnes.

The New airport is also expected to facilitate international connectivity and transport.

Nakuru will heavily rely on the upcoming airport to promote and boost its robust hospitality and tourism industry.

The airport  will as well offer alternative route for flights diverted from Nairobi.
