ATHLETICS: The Coast edition of the annual Safaricom Diabetes Walk will take place at the Butterfly Pavilion in Mombasa tomorrow with the aim of raising funds to provide free insulin kits to young diabetics from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Other objectives of the event are to train teachers and communities on prevention, identification and management of diabetes, and advocate for a review of the country’s Essential Drugs List to include anti-diabetic medication.
The event, which will be in its fifth year, comes just a week after thousands participated in the 12th edition of the Nairobi walk to help raise awareness for diabetes with Sh3 million being realised this year from participants in Mombasa, up from Sh1.5 million in 2015.
Participants from the region are expected to increase this year with over 53 schools already confirming participation. “The funds raised last year will be used to train 100 teachers next month as well as carry out community awareness drives,” said Eva Muchemi, Executive Director DMI Centre.
