Kenya loses World U20 title to Jamaica ,finish fourth in Cali

Kenya failed to replicate their previous glittering show at the just concluded World Under-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia after finishing fourth overally behind leaders Jamaica who secured a top spot.

The global athletics giants missed out on gold in all the four finals they were involved in, only winning silver and bronze in the women’s 1500m while the men’s 800m and steeplechase as well as the women’s 5,000m ended in disappointment with no medals.

This as they bagged silver and bronze medals on Saturday morning in the 3,000m race at the 19th edition of the event which took place at the Pascual Guerrero Olympics Stadium in Cali, Colombia.

The East African representativess failed to defend the title they won during the delayed 2020 World Under-20 Athletics Championships last year after sealing a top finish after collecting 16 medals with eight gold, one silver and seven bronze medals.

The country was represented by a contingent of 28 athletes which competed in both track and field events in the hopes of making history by winning the overall title for the third time in a row.

Kenya won the 2018 edition in Tampere, Finland, before repeating the feat at Moi Sports Complex in Kasarani, Kenya, last year.

Ethiopia finished ahead of Kenya despite winning 10 medals as well, by virtue of having more gold; five.

Jamaica finished top of the standings after a harvest of 14 medals; six gold, five silver and three bronze.

The USA finished second with 13; five gold, four silver and four bronze.

The 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships which came to a conclusion on Saturday brought together the best U20 athletes in Santiago de Cali, Colombia.
