The MP-Elect is on the run after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordered his arrest for murder.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa who is wanted over the alleged killing of his opponent’s aide Brian Olunga at a polling station in Bungoma County on Tuesday has been re-elected. The lawmaker garnered 26, 861 votes to win his reflection bid on a UDA ticket. His win was announced in his absentia after the  Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Noordin Haji, ordered his apprehension after he went into hiding following the shocking incident.

Olunga was a bodyguard to DAP Kenya candidate Brian Khaemba, who was Barasa’s opponent in the elections. According to police in Bungoma, the MP who had been given 24 hours to surrender is still at large and his phone is switched off.

Khaemba who reported the matter to Kimilili sub-county police said the incident happened at around 6pm when they had gone to Chebukwabi polling station to witness the counting of votes. He told police that he met Barasa and after about three minutes, he, (Khaemba) decided to leave for another station and headed to his car. However,  the Barasa followed him and later drew a pistol and shot his aide, Brian Olunga on the forehead.

“He bled profusely and was rushed to Kimilili sub-county hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment,” Khaemba added in a statement given to police on Tuesday.

His re-election means he will serve the Kimilili constituency for a second term. He was first elected in 2017 on the Jubilee party ticket.
