A man was on Wednesday arrested for being in illegal possession of six elephant tusks.

Atanas Nzioka was arrested at a petrol station in Donholm, Nairobi and detained at the Lang’ata police station.

The police officers at Lang’ata acted on intelligence reports that there was a man at Dohnholm petrol station with elephant tusks.

The officers found him with a carrier bag that marched the reports they had received.

Upon inspection, the officers found the bag to be carrying the tusks weighing 11 kilogrammes.

The officers escorted Nzioka to the Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters for interrogations and recording of a statement under OB NO 73/30/01/2019.

The man will be charged on Friday at a Kibera court with violating Section 92 (41) of the amended of the Wildlife Conversation and Management Act 2018.

According to an IUCN’s African Elephant Status Report, Africa’s elephant population has crashed by an estimated 111,000 in the past decade primarily due to poaching.

Eastern Africa – the region most affected by poaching – has experienced an almost 50 per cent elephant population reduction.
