Kenyans using iPhones that supports 5G networks, should immediately update to the latest iOS 16.2 which has just rolled out. It brings 5G Support on the Safaricom Network. The telco recently launched commercial 5G access, and you can find the areas where 5G network is live here.

To update your iPhone to iOS 16.2, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Once your phone downloads and installs the update, the iPhone will boot into “5G ON” mode. You can switch it back to 4G to save battery life etc. To do that, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data.

To get the details of which 5G bands are supported in Kenya, the Apple website has already been updated with the necessary information.

What’s new with iOS 16.2:

Here’s a list of other new features that come with iOS 16.2:

  • End to end iCloud data encryption with Advanced data protection
  • Apple Music now has a karaoke mode
  • The Freeform app is finally live
  • Airdrop to “Everyone” is now limited to 10 minutes only

My favourite new things are the Freeform app, and the Karaoke Mode on Apple Music. I will be talking about my experience with Freeform in the coming days. That’s if it turns out to be exciting as it was on the demo during WWDC.
