NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 15 – Skipper Queentor Abel turned in a woman-of-the-match performance as she led the national women’s cricket team to a nine-wicket win over Qatar in their third match of the Kenya Quadrangular Women’s T20 Series at Nairobi Gymkhana on Thursday afternoon.
Abel led the way with 21 runs (not out) from 18 balls as her opening batting partner Mary Mwangi soon left crease with 11 runs from 12 balls.
Seven more runs, from five balls, by Venessa Adhiambo were enough to confirm the hosts’ victory as they easily reached the Qataris’ score of 39 runs, all-out.
Having elected to bat after winning the toss, the Middle Easterners could not muster much of a batting masterpiece with Aysha their best performer with 12 runs.
With Rochelle Quyn being run out by Lavendah Idambo, it all but confirmed the collapse of the Qataris’ batting order with a paltry 39 runs in 17.2 overs.
It leaves them rooted at the bottom of the four-team tournament with no points following their previous losses to Uganda and Tanzania.
The Kenyans climb second on the table with four points, having lost and won their previous two matches against Uganda and Tanzania respectively.
In an earlier match at the same venue, Uganda continued their impressive run at the tournament with a six-wicket win over neighbours Tanzania.
They now head the standings with six points, two ahead of Kenya as Tanzania and Qatar follow in that order with two and zero points respectively.
The eight-day competition is being held in a double round-robin format and resumes on Saturday as Kenya once again lock horns with the Qataris at the same venue.
