NAIROBI, Kenya, March 16 – The Government of Kenya and Fortescue Future Industries(FFI) have signed an agreement for the development of a 300-megawatt (MW) green ammonia and fertilizer facility in the Naivasha vicinity of Olkaria geothermal field.
The facility is expected to reinforce Kenya’s green growth agenda
As part of the project’s scope, the parties have also agreed to include the supply of green electricity to Kenya’s grid.
“This is an important milestone in our commitments to not only reduce Green House Gas emissions but more significantly make a bold statement that Kenya is on an ambitious green growth agenda,” said President William Ruto.
“Our plan to achieve radical socio-economic transformation commits our government to accelerate geothermal resource development, reduce the cost of renewable energy and transition to 100 per cent clean energy generation, by 2030. This requires major equity and technological investments,” Ruto said.
Fossil fuel-dependent fertiliser production is a significant contributor to green house gas emissions.
This is the first of three projects that will see Australia’s FFI invest in green energy and manufacturing in Kenya.
Fortescue Founder and Executive Chairman Andrew Forrest said, “This partnership sets Kenya on a path to industrial decarbonisation and we are determined to be with the people of Kenya on that journey, every step of the way.”
