NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 17 – Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday unveiled plans to construct an airstrip in Bomet to open up the region.
The CS stated that his ministry will work closely with the Kenya Airports Authority and the County government of Bomet to ensure the plan comes to fruition.
“We are exploring the possibility of constructing an airstrip in Bomet that will open up the South Rift region and facilitate faster movement of people and goods,” he said.
Murkomen was meeting with leaders from the county who highlighted the poor state of infrastructure in the region where a number of high-priority roads and bridges need government attention to facilitate seamless mobility of buyers and sellers to enhance their trade.
Currently, there is a dilapidated airstrip in Kapkwen making this development by the CS timely for tea factories in the South Rift region that exports tea leaves overseas.
Murkomen also stated that his ministry will work in haste to ensure all stalled road projects are completed on time despite the tough economic times.
“Despite the financial constraints that we are facing as a country, we are looking at adopting interventions that will allow contractors to return to sites and complete assigned projects within the shortest time possible,” he said.
