A suspected political scuffle has turned ugly after Kisa East Member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Kakamega County Stephen Maloba was stabbed to death at a political rally within his ward in Khwisero constituency earlier today.
The ward representative was confirmed dead by Kakamega county leaders led by governor Fernandez Barasa.
Khwisero Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) Samuel Kogo confirmed the incident happened at a public meeting.
He said they are looking for the suspected assailants.
“We can’t say what the motive was for now but we are looking for suspects,” he said.
It is alleged that goons armed with a knife stabbed him while attempting to block him from addressing the crowd.
The gathering held at Munjiti had been convened by area Member of Parliament (MP) Christopher Aseka.
Maloba arrived at the venue much later after the area MP Aseka had settled at the function.
Unknown people attempted to block Maloba from entering the venue, resulting in the melee.
Maloba, who was stabbed in the chest, was taken to the Vihiga County Referral Hospital in Mbale, where he died shortly after arrival.
Maloba, a first time legislator, won the August 9, 2022 Member of County Assembly (MCA) election on independent ticket.
Maloba, who was voted on a KANU ticket, passed away after a melee ensued between supporters of the two camps.
Kakamega deputy governor Ayub Savula made the announcement at a public event in the area.
“We would like to stay here longer, but we can’t. Apologies for that. An MCA has just passed away in Khwisero Constituency,” he said.
