Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili Owino, popularly known as Babu Owino, caused laughter during Murang’a Woman’s Representative Betty Maina’s traditional wedding ceremony.
Babu urged the people of Central region to protect Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Raila Odinga’s votes in the next general elections the way he has taken care of his wife Fridah Muthoni.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) allied lawmaker boasted of his wife saying she hails from Mount Kenya.
He said he had taken care of his better half and that residents of the area should show loyalty to Mr Odinga, who is also the ODM leader, by protecting their votes cast in favour of the former Prime Minister.
“Personally, I am your in-law, so I am speaking boldly. I am in possession of your daughter named Muthoni and we have been together for 13 years.
“I urge the people of Murang’a and the entire Mt Kenya region to protect your votes (cast for Raila Odinga) as we have protected your ladies,” Babu Owino said to laughter at Ms Betty’s dowry negotiation.

Mathira MP Eric Wa Mumbi nominated the Murang’a women’s representative.
“Today I think Betty is gone…. We say ‘Hii imeenda’ (she is gone). My in-laws, I am happy to be part of this event. In fact, we had to postpone our demonstration because of this very important event,” the vocal lawmaker said jokingly.
“Congratulations to my friends Eric and Betty. Marriage is a union between two people to the exclusion of all others. The only person you include in marriage is the Almighty God,” he added, quoting Bible verses.
The dowry negotiation process, known in Kikuyu culture as ‘kuhanda ithigi’, involves marking a woman’s territory by introducing her to her parents.
This is followed by the payment of the dowry and the traditional marriage of the woman and man.
The couple can then choose to have a church wedding, a traditional marriage, a marriage at the Attorney General’s office or even settle down.
