The Kenya Meteorological Department says showers and thunderstorms are expected Sunday afternoon over Western Kenya, Southern and Central Rift Valley and Central Highlands including Nairobi.

On its Twitter handle, the weatherman says moderate to heavy rainfall should be expected over the same areas from Monday and throughout next week

After a long dry spell across country, a moderate downpour was experienced in Nairobi and its environs Saturday night.

Acting Director of Meteorological Services, Stella Aura, said areas in the Western highlands including Kakamega and the Lake Basin region, the central highlands and the coastal strip will continue to receive light rains that are also erratic well into next week.

She noted that areas around Moyale on the border with Ethiopia are also likely to receive some rainfall.

While noting that the rains will be mostly erratic, Aura noted that cooler than average Sea Surface Temperatures along the Western Equatorial Indian Ocean coupled with very warm Surface Temperatures to the east of Madagascar have contributed to delay in the establishment of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone in Kenya.

This she noted has led to the late onset of the rainfall. In the March to May long rains season forecast, the Weatherman had predicted the onset in the central highlands including Nairobi to be in the second week of March and the end in the fourth week of May.
