Debutants Lakers are braced for a tough weekend when they host seasoned sides in United States International University (USIU-A) and defending champions Telkom in Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) league encounters on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The Kisumu-based club, which is making its debut in the top-flight league, started the campaign strongly clinching a win and two draws as they sit third on the log with five points behind Telkom (7) and USIU (6).
Lakers are thus enjoying an unbeaten record in the league having edged Kenyatta University by a solitary goal in their opening match before their next two matches against Strathmore University and Sliders ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, head coach Brian Aduda is expecting a tough encounter as his side takes on the two crucial matches but nevertheless, he is certain his side can throw a surprise.
“We are facing two experienced sides in the league and we know it won’t be easy for our young side but at the same time result is about what you do in the pitch and we are ready to battle it out until the final whistle,” said Aduda.
Aduda- a former Kenyan international- also revealed that key to their success is teamwork and passion exhibited by his youthful squad predominantly made up of students drawn from the western and Nyanza regions.
“Teamwork is our mantra because we don’t have any player that we rely on and I do believe that if we remain focused then we can shock the two sides over the weekend,” added Aduda.
The newbies will however miss the services of three players including first-choice goalkeeper Millicent Odhiambo who are still schooling at Sinyolo Girls in Kisumu.
In the men’s premier league, the in-form Wazalendo host Chase Sailors on Saturday at the City Park and may go top of the league having maintained a perfect 100 percent record after winning all their four opening matches thus far.
In Kakamega, Western Jaguars will play host to USIU as they seek to bounce back after going down 5-3 to Kenya Police in their last match.
Former Champions Kenya Police will be in action against Parklands on Sunday at the City Park as they strive to continue their resurgence after a slow start to the season that has left them fifth on the standings
