Africa’s top flag carriers miss out on 2019 list of best airlines globally

– Qatar Airways was voted the World’s Best Airline, followed by Singapore Airlines and ANA All Nippon Airways respectively

– Air Asia won the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline Award while the World’s Best Economy Class and Economy Class Seat Award went to Japan Airlines

– Ethiopian Airlines was ranked the best in Africa, 44th globally, whereas South African Airways scooped the Best Airlines Staff Service Award

– Additionally, South African-based Fastjet won the Best Low-Cost Airlines in Africa

The 2019 list of top 10 best airlines in the world is out, but that is not the big news in the African aviation industry.

None of the African aviation giants made it to the top of the global league table unveiled during the 2019 Skytrax World Airline Awards ceremony held on Tuesday, June 18, at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, France.

Flying at the top was Qatar Airways, once again voted by the consumers as the World’s Best Airline, followed by Singapore Airlines and ANA All Nippon Airways at second and third positions respectively according to the Skytrax report.

The Gulf flag carrier Airways which was dislodged from the top spot by Singapore Airlines in 2018 made a remarkable comeback as it also bagged the World’s Best Business Class, World’s Best Business Class Seat and Best Airline in the Middle East awards.

At fourth, fifth and sixth slots were the Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates and EVA Air respectively, followed by Hainan Airlines, Qantas Airways, Lufthansa and Thai Airways in positions seven, eight, nine and ten in that order.

Other notable awards were that of the World’s Best Low-cost Airline which went to Air Asia and World’s Best Economy Class and Economy Class Seat Award won by Japan Airlines.

The Syntax award for the World’s Cleanest Airlines went to EVA Air, whereas that of the World’s Best First Class Onboard Catering was taken by Air France.

The best ranked airline in Africa was Ethiopian Airlines which emerged at position 44, four places down from position 40 in 2018, in the global league table.

Still in Africa, the Ethiopian flag carrier was followed by South African Airways which was ranked 46th (form 45 in 2018) globally.

South African Airways was also recognised as the Best Airlines Staff Service Award.

Kenya Airways (KQ) was ranked at a distance position 90 globally, five places backward from position 85 it held in 2018.
