The national medical research agency, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KeMRI) experts led by Amina Abdullahi have raised concerns of spiking sexually transmitted new pathogen of gonorrhea with samples obtained from female commercial sex workers based in Nairobi.
The experts describe the gonorrhea pathogen as a drug-resistant stating that those with the disease rarely exhibit any clinical signs or symptoms adding that the disease has demonstrated resistance to the usual drugs used to contain the infection.
“The research findings which is of concern resulting from the just the concluded study shows a possible multi-drug-resistant gonorrhea circulating among Nairobi female sex workers. The result revealed total resistance to all the antimicrobials complete,” observed Amina.
The experts have expressed concern as they reveal that many city dwellers are at the risk of being in possession of the disease posing a huge threat to their reproductive health with a possible permanent implication.
The findings are from a study carried out last year after samples were derived from a sick 24-year-old sex worker.
The research findings show that the disease is majorly transmitted by the female city sex workers.
According tom the experts, the researchers argue that the ladies focus more on protecting themselves against HIV, forgetting other STIs that would equally affect them.
Gonorrhea, colloquially known as the clap, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae which affects both male and female genders.
The disease is usually transmitted either through the genitals, mouth or rectum with those Infected possibly experiencing pain or burning with urination, discharge from the penis or testicular pain.
