Daily Star however reports that United are hoping they can ship the striker who earns about £400,000-a-week out of the club this summer.

According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, Roma were close to nicking a deal with the Premier League club for the player to join them on loan for the season.

But the former Barcelona striker turned down the deal because the club would only pay half of his wages during his loan spell.

Palmeri tweeted: “Manchester United reached an agreement with Roma for a straight loan of Alexis Sanchez as Roma would have paid half of his wages at €9.5m per year, but the Chilean refused the transfer.”

Sanchez will now compete with Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Daniel James for a place up front at Old Trafford.

And United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is nearing a return to first-team action after competing in the Copa America over the summer.

We don’t have the biggest forward line in numbers, so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect, because we expect him to come good at this club, he’s quality.

We’ve had a behind closed doors game, and he’s training, he’s doing a little bit of extras, he’ll be gradually integrated into more and more playing time, but we’ll have more behind closed doors games.

With one game a week now, it’s hard to keep players ticking, so we’re arranging a few of them.”

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Alexis Sanchez joined Man United from Arsenal in the January 2018 transfer window and much has been expected of him.

But the Chile international has failed to live up with the billing and has been one of the worst high-profile transfer in recent memory.

The 31-year-old has made just 45 appearances, scoring five goals in over 18 months since moving to the Theatre of Dreams.
