Zoo FC dug deep to secure a 3-2 win over Kakamega Homeboyz and put their top flight fate in their own hands heading into the final round of Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season.
Derrick Anami scored belter to decide the scintillating contest with their victory confirming Vihiga United’s relegation after two years in the KPL while Chemelil Sugar slid a place down to occupy the promotion playoff spot.
Earlier, Vihiga United – who began the matchday holding a three-point deficit to Zoo – surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Western Stima FC and dampen their survival chances at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
Youngstar Amos Kigadi had put Vihiga 1-0 up on the day eight minutes into the second half but the hosts allowed Stima back in it with Kennedy Otieno and Henry Onyango completing the rally in the final quarter-hour.
Vihiga United thus join Mount Kenya United, who were relegated a fortnight ago, in dropping to the second-tier National Super League (NSL) while one of Zoo, Stima or Posta Rangers will feature in the the promotion playoff.
Zoo have dropped only four of 15 points in their last five matches but a nervous start meant they fell a goal inside just three minutes when Maxwell Ravel powered home a shot on the turn to leave goalkeeper Martin Elungat stock-still.
Danson Chetambe gave the hosts a much-needed lifeline at the stroke of half-time when he sent Gabriel Andika the wrong way from the penalty spot after Kennedy Onyango was punished for handling the ball inside the area.
