The Kenya Auto Bazaar Association (KABA) has written an open letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta in a bid to scrap the proposed age limit for second hand imported cars.
In the letter, the association noted their displeasure for the proposed Draft National Automobile Policy which was established by the Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya.
“We strongly feel and believe that this proposed policy is very discriminative and solely designed, motivated and purposed to first frustrated then finally, completely destroy the used car import business in Kenya and make car ownership in our Country a rare privilege for only a few and out of reach for more than 85% of the population,” reads the letter in part.
According to the proposed policy, an age limit is to be implemented on imported cars into the country from the current 8 years to 5 years by 2019 and then 3 years by 2021.
In the letter signed by the association’s chairman Major (Rtd) John Kipchumba and his secretary Charles Munyori, they further asserted that the age limit clause would cut short the careers of thousands of entrepreneurs, traders, salespeople, owners and even mechanics.

“We are also contributing to the National Government in excess of Ksh49 billion in taxes annually and providing livelihoods to thousands to Kenyans,” adds the letter.
The association called on President Uhuru to instruct CS Munya to put on hold the implementation of the policy.
Additionally, they asked the Commander in chief to also ask the CS to urgently convene new consultative forums that will embrace and incorporate the views and recommendations of all Manufacturers and Automotive stakeholders.
They are accusing the CS of not including the officials of the association, resulting to the “discriminative” policy.
