Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition has this evening announced the cancelation of their planned Wednesday antigovernment protests over the high cost of living, the coalition has instead urged Kenyans to hold a solemn vigil to honour the memory of the ones who lost their lives and even suffered brutalization during the weekly demos.
In a heartfelt message posted on his Twitter account, Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, urged Kenyans to join the vigil by lighting candles and laying flowers in memory of the fallen.

“We will hold a different kind of protest. The peaceful protests will take the form of solidarity parades and vigil for victims of police brutality in various locations in all parts of the country, “
part of the statement read.
Through an official press release, the opposition coalition alleged that during the recent demonstrations, there were 50 recorded deaths and hundreds of victims being treated in hospitals due to injuries inflicted by the police.
“So far we have at least 50 deaths and hundreds admitted in hospitals with grave injuries…..many are therefore nursing their injuries at home while others have heard their death go unrecorded,”
Raila says the coalition plans to initiate the process of reaching out to the families of the victims that day, in order to offer assistance and support.

International Criminal Court
In response to the alleged police brutality and human rights violations, the coalition has taken the matter to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“During the vigils, candle lighting and laying of flowers, we encourage Kenyans to say prayers and read out the names of victims,”
They have formally written to the ICC, urging them to investigate these reported violations and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
The ongoing demonstrations have led to a contentious relationship between the government and the opposition.
The government has accused the protests of causing economic disruptions and, in response, has taken measures such as arresting opposition leaders, including Embakasi Member of Parliament Babu Owino, as a means of curbing the demonstrations.
