Singer and political aspirant Kevin Bahati has disclosed spending Sh33million to fund his campaign. The Mathare hopeful MP told Tanzanian journalist Millard Ayo that he was yet to spend Sh10million on the day of the general election.

To justify his funding costs, Bahati claimed it would normally cost over Sh50million to campaign as an MP in Kenya.

Asked how he received his funding, Bahati stated that most of his campaign money came from well-wishers, including his fans, friends, and his political party, Jubilee.

“It costs more than Sh50million to campaign as an MP in Kenya, and yes, it’s a lot of money,” said Bahati, adding, “I have spent Sh33million in my campaign so far… I have received a lot of support from various people and groups. There’s a Sh10million budget for the election day.”

Bahati further added that he intended to vie for the top seat come 2037, saying it’s his dream to become the president of Kenya.

“Take my word… I will be the president of this country come 2037. That is my dream,” said Bahati.

Stepping into politics, Bahati did not doubt that he would be as successful as he had been in his music career. However, his luck in politics would almost run out after Azimio, led by Edwin Sifuna, urged him to drop his parliamentary bid in favour of ODM aspirant Anthony Oluoch.

“I cannot step down for someone that has not helped my people. Someone who has used Mathare to benefit himself. Someone who does not know the problems of my people,” said Bahati.

Bahati, who has been vocal about his wishes to represent the people of Mathare, said he understands the plight of his people, having been born and raised in the area.

“Mathare is where I was born and raised, it is the place that made me who I am. We have been wanting and crying for change. If I can do something to better the lives of people in Mathare, why not go for it. Mathare people are going through the same problems I went through more than 20 years ago,” said Bahati.
