Residents of Orokwo location in Baringo on Thursday trekked for over four kilometres carrying a casket of deceased man due to bad roads.
The deceased, Kibowen Cherutich, 88, died in his grass-thatched hut on Monday night after a short illness.
“It forced us to carry the casket containing his body from Kabarnet airstrip down to his rural village, 4km from the main road,” an elder Bowen Mengich said.
Mengich, however, blamed the poor roads to laxity by leaders who he said have failed to ensure access roads in the remote villages.
“We have lost many of our members here due to emergencies like snakebites because of impassable poor roads which even boda boda cannot pass through,” he said.
Another 48-year old resident David Ng’etich said the area has been without roads for over 50 years.
“The entire place is green and bushy therefore residents risk scorpions and snakebites as they walk through thickets and rocky paths, the sloppy terrains also may cause one to slide” Ng’etich said.
This comes barely four months after Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis launched Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) initiative dubbed ‘Imarisha Barabara’ targeting to open up and repair feeder roads across the county.
