Beatrice Chebet won silver after finishing second in the women’s 5,000m finals at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA.
Chebet who was crowned the African champion over the distance in Mauritius in June clocked 14:46.75,a personal best to win Kenya’s fourth silver medal at the championship.
“It was a matter of tactics. I was well positioned,” said Chebet. “This medal will make a good difference for me.”
Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay who won silver in the women’s 1500m early this week won the race 14.46.29 while her compatriot Dawiy Sayeum finished third 14:47.36.
“I have been training well for 1,500m and this helps spring on the home stretch,” said Tsegay, who collected silver in the 1,500m earlier in the meet. “This win is for all of Ethiopia.
“I was trying to control the race coming from the first place during the run so it was very hard for me … I felt in shape and my victory confirms it was a good plan.”
Margaret Kemboi attempts to win her second medal at the championship bore no fruit after finishing in fourth position while Gloria Kite came home in a distant 10th position.
