Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched a crackdown on several billionaires in a bid to recover billions of shillings.
Featuring in the list filed by the authority are the country’s movers and shakers who control multi-billion empires and who are suspected of evading taxes at a time when the country is struggling with a huge debt and ordinary citizens feeling the pinch from the taxman.
Also named in the list are business enterprises, as well as individuals who headed companies and public institutions that have been accused of failing to pay full taxes.
Below is a list of those in the authority’s radar in the new crackdown.
Evans Kidero-while serving as Nairobi Governor 4.2 Billion.
KRA has accused former Nairobi Governor of failing to pay withholding tax amounting to Ksh 4.2 billion during his tenure at the helm of the county.
In defence, Kidero’s administration had maintained that the amount should be deducted from what the central government owes the county.
Wilfred Murungi- Mastermind Tobacco-Sh 2 Billion
The firm owned by Wilfred Murungi is on the taxman’s radar for failing to remit excise duty, VAT, PAYE and penalties amounting to Sh. 2 Billion.
The matter is currently in court after auctioneers were instructed to sell the company’s assets in a bid to recover the money.
Duncan Murashiki (as Oil Libya General Manager) Sh 15 Billion
KRA has the Oilibya GM in its focus over claims that he gave he gave incomplete information, making it impossible for the authority to establish the firm’s tax liability. At the center of the tussle is Sh 15 Billion.
Kamlesh Pattni
The billionaire who also doubles up as a preacher has found himself on the list with two companies associated with suspected of evading taxes.
Njenga Karume
The estate of the fallen billionaire is also on the radar parallel disputes between administrators and the respective families which have seen the deceased’s business empire fail to remit taxes as required by law.
Early this year, Jacaranda hotel owned by the family made headlines after auctioneers descended on it in a bid to recover Sh 400 Million in tax arrears.
Westgate mall
The country’s premier mall located in Westlands is on the taxman’s radar over Sh 221 Million that was part of its Sh 7.2 billion insurance compenstation following a terrorist attack in 2013.
