There were long queues in supermarkets in Bungoma on Wednesday as parents shopped for their children in preparation for school.
Parent John Nabibia, whose two children are at Kibabi Boys, told the Star the prices of most essential items are costly.
“I have come with my boys to do shopping. I’ve bought a few books because the prices are not pocket-friendly,” he said.
Another parent Ken Wafula, who is a cane farmer, said he will not take his children to school since Nzoia Sugar Factory has not paid their arrears.
“We had been promised by the government that we will receive our pay before Christmas. A task force was formed to look into the problems in the sugar industry, but till now we haven’t received a single penny,” he said.
Wafula appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure that cane farmers are paid soon for them to take their students to school and to meet their daily needs.
