At least 56 enterprises have been closed down across the Country for operating irregularly and engaging in illegal trade following a crackdown by the National Environmental Management Authority.
Among those affected were traders found distributing banned plastic bags, with 46 of them arrested in Busia County in the last one week alone.
NEMA director in charge of Busia Edward Menza disclosed that the banned bags get into the country through the Kenya/Uganda border.
He says a consignment of 1000 bales of plastic bags was confiscated in the border town and arrests made.

The same was replicated in Kabarnet town as business owners engaged NEMA officials in running battles.
The Authority officers raided hotels, resorts, tertiary colleges and petrol stations within the area arresting 10 people because of poor sanitation.
Managers of the affected premises were taken in for failing to comply with water quality regulation in getting the effluent discharge licenses.
NEMA has vowed to sustain the crackdown in other towns to ensure that institutions and business operate within the law.
