– Players can now feature for their new club in the cup competition if they join a new club mid-way into the season
– Unlike before, players were unable to play for new clubs if they had featured in the competition for their previous side
With Liverpool set to sign Red Bull Salzburg’s Takumi Minamino when the January transfer window opens next month, the Reds will enjoy a massive advantage after the new UEFA rules.
The Japanese prolific scorer will be able to feature for the Reds in the Champions League if the deal pulls through at the end of the window.

This is because UEFA – the European football governing body has changed the rules guiding the continental championship at the knockout stages.
Before now, players who are cup-tied were not allowed to feature for their new club if they switch sides during the winter transfer window.

Brazil international Philippe Coutinho could not play for Barcelona when he joined them in January of 2018.
However, SunSport reports that clubs must stick with the 25-man limit and meet the quota of eight “locally-trained players”.
Manchester United have also shown interest in the player but Liverpool have an edge to seal a £7.25 million for the Japanese.

Minamino has scored nine goals and 11 assists for his Austrian Premier League side including one of each at Anfield in October.
Champions League last 16 draws took place on Monday, December 16, at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, with teams who finished in the top two of the competition in the group stages discovering their opponents in the knock out round.

Four Premier League clubs including Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea were all on the cards, with City earning a tricky fixture with Real Madrid.
Holders Liverpool have been drawn with Atletico Madrid, with Chelsea set to battle Bayern Munich in what will be a repeat of the 2012 final.
