Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has insisted national football team Harambee Stars still need to be supported despite their early elimination from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Stars picked a single win in Group C against neighbours Tanzania, losing their two other matches to Algeria and Senegal.

The Sebastien Migne-tutored side eventually finished third in the group, with Benin’s draw against Cameroon ending the team’s hopes of progressing to the next round as one of the best third-placed teams.

Stars’ early exit from the tournament was greeted with despair and despondency among Kenyan fans.

But Sonko has come out to rally behind the team, promising to make the newly-renovated Dandora Stadium available for them for training sessions ahead of the African Nations Championship (Chan) campaign.

“Despite the early elimination of Harambee Stars at the ongoing Afcon tournament in Egypt, we should not lose focus on the development of sports in the country,” Sonko told Citizen Digital.

“As Harambee Stars prepare for the Chan qualifications, my administration will offer support to the team including availing the Dandora Stadium for training by our team,” the county chief added.
