NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 28 – World Leader Ruth Chepngetich battled punishing humid conditions in Doha, Qatar to clinch the women’s marathon title at the 2019 IAAF World Championships in 2:32:43 to open Kenya’s gold account on Saturday night.
The win saw Chepngetich who stormed to her first global title dethrone Kenyan-born Bahrainian Rose Chelimo who settled for silver after clocking 2:33:46 while Namibian and Commonwealth Games champion Helalia Johannes took bronze in 2;34:15.
Two-time world champion Edna Kiplagat,39, faded to fourth in a Season’s Best time of 2:35:36.
With the win, Chepngetich pocketed Sh 6.2 million (USD 60,000).
“I am feeling good… I am so happy and I thank God for the win, it was a tough race, I ran in Dubai Marathon and the weather was almost the same like here so it was not bad for me,” Chepngetich said after the race.
