Cost of living soars as 2kg of sugar hits Sh420 – Nairobi News

Kenyans will have to dig deeper into their pockets to survive the high cost of living brought about by the latest fuel price hike.

A spot check by Nairobi News on supermarkets in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday revealed changes in the prices of sugar and cooking flour.

Before the fuel price changes, a two kilogramme packet of Mumias Sugar, Kabras Sugar and Mara Sugar was retailing at less than Sh370. But the prices have since shot up to Sh420 in all supermarkets in the CBD.

At Quickmart Supermarket’s Moi Avenue a 2kg packet of sugar were retailing at Sh365 during the morning hours, including their Quickchoice brand sugar, but the prices have since been changed.

An attendant at one of the supermarkets explained to Nairobi News, that the management had instructed them to promptly change the prices.

After about five minutes of waiting, another attendant came with the new price tags of Sh420.

The prices of flour are also expected to go up. In some supermarkets that Nairobi News visited, the two unga brands that have lately been sold at fair prices were missing from the shelves. All the supermarkets visited were out of the cheap flour.

Last month, Umi cooking flour was selling at Sh159 and Ajab brand at Sh166. As it stands, a 2kg packet of Soko retails at Sh223, Amaze at Sh249,Ugali Afya at Sh265, Two Ten at Sh205 and Taifa at Sh228.

Despite President William Ruto’s promise to Kenyans that the cost of living will fall under his government, the situation has largely remained unchanged.

According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), a litre of premium is selling at Sh182.70, diesel at Sh168.40 and kerosene at Sh161.13 in Nairobi.

This also comes as Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition continues to negotiate with the government through the bipartisan teams from both sides, a move that ended the countrywide demonstrations. Part of the issues that the opposition wants to be addressed by the government is the soaring cost of living.
