The government has embarked on a training and sensitization program targeting dairy dealers and handlers in efforts geared towards stemming milk adulteration that is on rise.
Livestock Principal Secretary Henry Kimutai says the training will build capacity, create awareness as well as ensure quality assurance along the value chain ultimately driving growth within the dairy sector.
In the last four years, the Kenya Dairy Board as regulator has been carrying out a series of campaigns urging Kenyans to stop consuming unprocessed milk.
However, there seems be no end in sight owing to affordability of raw milk. On average, the price of a half a liter of processed milk goes for Sh 50 while the same quantity in raw form sells at Sh 35.

This has created a haven for unscrupulous dealers to exploit. cases of adulterated milk in the market have become rampant, a move that has forced Kenya Dairy Board to crack the whip on some of the selling points to curb the menace.
According to the Kenya Dairy Board, the new policy guidelines and training program will go a long way in taming the vice.
The first phase of the training targets 1,000 milk dealers within Nairobi County that will then be spread to other parts of the country.
All the while, investors in the dairy industry are calling on the government to incentivize the venture.
More than 50 per cent of the total milk is sold through informal channels with processors controlling just a small fraction of the commodity.
