Demonstrations in Kibra and Mathare slums turned ugly after two gangs emerged and started to fight one another.
One gang in Kibra that carried crude weapons like pangas and rungus seemed to enjoy the protection of police officers.
The gang members claimed that they were out to protect themselves from people who were pretending to be demonstrators while in the real sense they were looting.
“We are here to stop them from destoying our property in the name of peaceful maandamano. Why would someone come from a different area to come and loot and destroy your property?” posed one angry resident in Mathare’s Mlango Kubwa area.
In Kibra, the other gang that did not enjoy the protection of the police was left with no option but to continue throwing stones in a bid to repulse their rivals.
Meanwhile Azimio Leader Raila Odinga and other leaders continued with his procession in Kawangware.
This s despite being repulsed by the police lobbed them with teargas canisters and sprayed their vehicles with water cannons.
Raila on Sunday evening had accused Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of organizing goons to disrupt the peaceful protests organized by Azimio.
He claimed that Gachagua set up an armoury and command centres in two different locations in the city, one of them next to Bomas of Kenya belonging to a former senior government official and another at a house owned by a current Cabinet Secretary (CS).
“It has come to our attention that Mr Rigathi Gachagua is currently coordinating a major operation of mayhem against planned Azimio la Umoja protest rallies scheduled to take place in Nairobi tomorrow,” said Raila in a statement.
