The government on Friday launched a capacity development programme targeting veterinarians and farmers to enhance their capacity to protect animals from disasters linked to extreme weather events.

Judy Kimaru, campaigns manager, Animals in Disaster at World Animal Protection, said that training and awareness creation is key to boost protection of livestock and wildlife when natural disasters strike.
“Many people living in areas prone to disasters rely on animals for their livelihoods and survival. Protecting animals secures their livelihood and food security,” said Kimaru.
She said that World Animal Protection will be rolling out a free online course targeting veterinary doctors and farmers to strengthen their capacity to rescue farmed animals and wildlife affected by climate-related disasters.
Kimaru said the online training programme will be implemented across the sub-Saharan African region where climatic shocks like droughts, floods and disease outbreaks have impacted negatively on livestock.
