NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 2 – Defence Cabinet Aden Duale and UDM Party Leader Ali Roba have intensified last-ditch campaigns to woo Garissa Township Constituency electorates to vote for the candidates during Thursday’s by-election.
The seat fell vacant after Duale resigned following his appointment to President William Ruto’s Cabinet as Defence Cabinet Secretary.
Duale enhanced campaigns across the constituency for UDA Candidate Mohamed Dekow Barrow by meeting different groups and communities to drum up support for the former gubernatorial candidate loser, describing him as the best to take over from him.
“Trusting me to lead them in the right direction, the Garre Community pledged to support whoever I would give the mantle of leadership to. And, I reassured them that, with Rtd Major Mohamed Barrow Dekow, they are in safe hands,” he said after meeting the leadership and members of the Garre Community of Garissa Township.
Roba led MPs in drumming support for UDM candidate Nasir Mohamed Dolal, who he described as a visionary, mature, and focused leader who would bring the desired change in the cosmopolitan constituency.
Meanwhile, Abduwaq Clan Sultan Deqow Maalim Sambul also called on the electorate and candidates to avoid any negative utterances that may trigger conflict between their supporters.
The race that has attracted eight candidates is viewed as a two-horse race between Dekow and Dolal who has been runner-up to Duale during the 2017 and 2022 General Elections.
