East Africa Community (EAC) facilitator of the Peace Process in the war torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), retired president Uhuru Kenyatta has called for immediate ceasefire of renewed hostilities in North Kivu region.
Kenyatta has called for adherence to the Luanda Agreements and a return to the Nairobi Peace Process in DRC Congo.
He decried the deteriorating situation in North Kivu in the DRC where fighting has broken out between various armed groups as well as between the FARDC and the M23.
“The former President of the Republic of Kenya H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, takes note with deep concern of the sharply deteriorating situation in North Kivu in the DRC where fighting has broken out between various armed groups as well as between the FARDC and the M23,” said the Office of the fourth President of the Republic of Kenya
“Once again the Facilitator calls for cessation of all hostilities and adherence to the Luanda Agreements and a return to the Nairobi Peace Process on consultations to build peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.” He added.
Following the break out of fighting, Uhuru expressed serious concern for the targeted killings of civilians by armed groups and thousands of internally displaced people resulting from two days of fighting in the region and urges the DRC government and the international community to step up their support to the IDPs.
In what could potentially compound the delicate situation, On Tuesday evening, the Rwandan forces fired at a fighter jet from the DRC that it said violated its airspace, prompting the Congolese government to accuse it of an act of war.
Rwandese government termed the move as a defensive measure.
“A Sukhoi-25 fighter jet from the Democratic Republic of Congo violated for the third time Rwandan airspace,” over Rubavu district, near North Kivu capital Goma, Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said.
