Eight people died on Saturday morning after a matatu they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Matulo along the Webuye-Bungoma highway.
The morning crash left six people among them university students with serious injuries.
Police say the accident occurred after a Nissan matatu headed to Webuye town rammed onto a stationary lorry as the driver tried to overtake a speeding Modern Coast bus.
“The lorry had developed a mechanical problem and had stalled on the road,” police said.
The driver of the Nissan matatu fled the scene after escaping unhurt.
The injured were taken to Webuye Sub-county hospital as police launched investigations.
Reports indicate that among dead is an unidentified Kibabi university student who was in the ill-fated matatu.
