An A- student in Eldoret has opted to doing odd jobs for survival and to raise school fee to join university since 2019.

Koech Kiprotich digs pit latrine and doubles up as night shift security guard in apartment as his dreams of joining universities remains shaking.

As other students across institutions of higher learning in the country solely rely on their parents for their fees and general upkeep, joining a tertiary learning institution has not been fulfilled.

” I dig pit latrine to eke living also save to join university to fulfil my dream,I was hunting job but some asked me if could work ans night shift security guard for Ksh 200, I had to accept his offer since i have to support my parents.” Kiprotich stated.

Kiprotich alumnae of Baringo High School scored an A- in KCSE class of 2019 and was later called to join St.Pauls University for Computer Science course at degree level before he sought transfer to Baraton but still he could not afford tuition fees and upkeep.

” I received an admission letter to join St.Pauls University for Computer Science course with Baraton as an aalternative but private universities are equally expensive given that my parents are not able to pay for my school fee.” He further said.

He there resorted to do menial jobs to eke living and support his mother who os terminally ill since search for formal job turn futile.

According to the locals, the Kiprotich’s unsuccessful jobs search has been viewed a discouragement owing tofact rhe he had performed exemplary well in KCSE with a section of locals utterly make demeaning remarks and calling education a ‘scam’.

“When you get an A much is expected from you,but you see now when you things does not work for you, it demoralises the young generations.” A local residents stated.

Even as his dream of getting a university degree still flimsy, Kiprotich believes one day as fate would have ht his dreams will be rekindled and that he will live his career dream that will subsequently get his family out of the tight grip of poverty.
